Biography

Maria Hammer was buried in the night on 27 Mar 1749[2]. She must have led a sad life, based on the three-line obituary in the church records. Joachim Ludwig Neuffer, the priest[1], did not have many kind words for her: "She did evil things in her youth, had a child out of wedlock, roamed the streets railing at passers-by and the world, and finally, when she was old and frail, spent the last two years of her life in the poorhouse." Today we would probably attest a mental disorder. It does not sound like she had family support at any time in her life. Even her funeral was lonely.

It is not clear if and how she fits in with the other Hammer families living in Untertürkheim at the time, such as any relationship to Michael Hammer or Caspar Hammer.

Note

The year of birth is pure guesswork, based on the description that in 1749 she was "old and frail", which seems to fit a person of 60 years or more. There is no trace of her child in the church records, which could mean that the birth occurred prior to 1694. (It is implied in her death record that her child's birth occurred in Untertürkheim, and so it is probable that she was born in Untertürkheim herself.)
