James Hamilton, was appointed by James II to the Privy Council of Ireland.He deserted and in 1689 served in the defence of Londonderry with King William of Orange.In 1697 he succeeded to his grandfather's baronetcy. James Hamilton's second cousin Charles died in 1701, he succeeded as[1] Earl of Abercorn, Baron Hamilton of Strabane . He was given the titles of Viscount Strabane and Baron Mountcastle, by King William on December 2, 1701.
He married Elizabeth Reading, daughter of Sir Robert Reading, 1st Baronet, on January 21, 1684. They had the following children:
