Francis Hamilton was born on 11 December 1838 in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland, son of Janet Lennox (Gibson) Hamilton and Francis Hamilton.^[1]

He was married to Sarah Murphy.

Francis died on 5 February 1883 in Heywood, Victoria, Australia, aged 44 years.^[2]
