Biography

Alfred Hugh Hall was born on 22nd October 1871[1] in Denby, Derbyshire, England. He was baptised at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Denby on 22nd November 1871, the son of John & Sarah Hall.[2]

On the 1881 census, Alfred H. Hall, aged 9 years, lived with his parents John & Sarah Hall at Denby, Derbyshire, where his father was a Coal miner and Publican. Also in the household was five siblings of Alfred's and his uncle Richard Weston.[3]

The 1891 census records Alfred, aged 19, living with his parents and siblings at Denby Common, Denby.[4] His occupation at the time was Coal miner.

He married Alice Shaw on the 24th September 1892 at Horsley, Derbyshire. Alfred was a 21 year old bachelor and coal miner residing at Denby. His father was John Hall, innkeeper. Alice was a 19 year old spinster from Kilburne. There were no father's details given for her. The witnesses to the marriage were Charles Horsley, Nellie Hall and Agnes Thorpe.[5]

In 1901, Alfred and Alice lived at Roby Field, Denby, with their two daughters Bertha (age 7) and Nellie. (age 5)[6]

On the 1911 census, Alfred and Alice lived at Milward Road, Codnor, with three daughters, Bertha, Nellie and Doris.(age 8) [7]

At the time of the 1939 Register, Alfred Hugh Hall was a patient at Mickleover County Hospital, Repton, Derbyshire. He was aged 72 years and married with no occupation.[8]

He died in the Shardlow District of Derbyshire in the September quarter of 1942, aged 70 years.[9] The newspaper printed notice of his death:

"Death of Loscoe Resident
Mr Alfred Hugh Hall, of Milward Road, Loscoe, passed away last Friday at 70 years of age. a native of Denby, he was a miner and worked at Britain Colliery. The funeral took place at St. Luke's Church, Loscoe, conducted by the Rev. F.T. Blackburne (Vicar of Pentrich) who also officiated at the graveside."[10]
