Biography

Freeborn ("Freeburn") Hall was born 1781 in New York, according to the 1850 U.S. Census for Montgomery County, Virginia. This birth year has been confirmed by the Virginia death and burials index, which records his death on 22 May 1876.

Freeborn was a son of Jesse Hall and Lydia Freeborn. He evidently takes his first name from his mother's family name. The Freeborns were among the early Quaker founders of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Portsmouth was the center of their large family, which also had branches in surrounding communities.

Indeed, there were so many Freeborns living near Portsmouth that one must make a disambiguation here: Freeborn Hall of New York is not identical to a cousin, also named Freeborn Hall, who was born 11 September 1786 at Portsmouth. This cousin Freeborn, the son of George Hall (1749 - 1830), was born on September 11, which Find A Grave has mistakenly given to the Freeburn Hall of New York (with no photograph of a headstone that would prove this assertion).

Freeborn's father, Jesse Hall, lived in Dutchess County, New York, prior to the war, but after the fighting was over he apparently went home to Rhode Island to marry a childhood sweetheart. Freeborn Hall and his brother John L. Hall were the offspring of that wedding, and they spent their first years in Dutchess County, New York.

In about 1790, the Hall family moved en masse from Dutchess County, New York, to Virginia. Lydia (Freeborn) Hall died at Montgomery County, Virginia, about 1794, when Freeburn was 13. Freeborn then became a step-son to Jesse's second wife, Phoebe Wilbur.

At age 25, Freeborn married Catherine Pate on 27 April 1807 at Montgomery County, Virginia. They had several children.

According to Findagrave.com, their children were:

  • Elizabeth Hall (1808- )
  • Jesse Hall (1809-1892)
  • Phebe Hall (1811- )
  • Jeremiah Pate Hall (1812- )
  • John M. Hall (1814- )
  • Andrew J. Hall (1816- )
  • Jane Hall (1818- )
  • Mary Ann Hall (1820-1886)
  • Rosanna Hall (1822-1900)
  • George W. Hall (1827- )
  • Catherine Hall (1833-1922)
  • Nancy Hall

Between 1811 and 1815, Freeburn Hall served in the War of 1812 as a Private in Col. McFarland's Indiana Militia Detachment. See the Wikipedia article "Indiana in the War of 1812" for a good overview.

The 1860 U.S. Census recorded 78-year-old farmer Freeburn Hall in Montgomery County (Alleghany Springs post office), Virginia, with Catherine, age 71, and George W., age 33 and also a farmer.

The adjacent household was occupied by John Hall (his brother) and family.

Freeborn passed away on 22 May 1876 in Montgomery County, Virginia, USA. He is buried in Ironto County, Virginia.
