Biography

Stephen Hales was the son of a Hales (John or Thomas) of Canterbury, whose brother was John I Hales (died 1572), of Coventry, Warwickshire and London. He married twice:[1]

  • Amy Amice (Morison) Beale, widow of Robert Beale (died 1548), and daughter of Thomas Morison (abt.1480-) of Cherdwell, Buckinghamshire. History of Parliament says that possibly all of his four sons and at least one daughter were by this first marriage:[1]
  1. Anne (Hales) Combe, who married Edward Combe (abt.1550-1597)Green, Nina. In SUMMARY: The document below is the Prerogative Court of Canterbury copy of the undated last will and testament, proved 10 November 1615, of John Combe (d. 10 July

1614)... Family Background, after "Testator's father's first marriage. Edward Combe (d. 1597)... 2014, p. 1-2. Citing will of Sir Richard Morison, TNA PROB 11/39/330, in which he mentions ‘my sister Amy’s children by Stephen Hales’; the Wikipedia article on Stephen Hales’ brother, John Hales (d.1572) edited by the author of this summary (Nina Green); Lewis, infra, p. 326; Bellew, infra, p. 148; and ‘Combs Families of Coventry’, etc. </ref>

Secondly, before 1561, he married Bridget (Over) Nethermill, widow of John Nethermill[2], and daughter of Henry Over.[1]

  1. Charles Hales, his heir and coexecutor with his mother, Bridget
  2. Timothy Hales
  3. Robert Hales
  4. Stephen Hales

In Parliament, he served as follows:[1]

1563 - Great Bedwyn
1571 - Leicester

His will was written 26 Jun 1574.[3] [4]Daughter Anne from his first marriage appears not to have been named in his will, which is not uncommon when children are born from a prior marriage.

Research Notes

  • Lookup of will of his first wife (if she had one), who presumably predeceased him and whose death predated Hales' second marriage is pending.
  • Some information on his life in Coventry.[5]
