He was the son of Edward Hale Jr (abt.1701-1757) and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). It's believed he was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. This is based on a deed dated 19 January 1738, whereas Joel's father, Edward Haile, is documented as owning land on Seward's Swamp, Newport Parish, Isle of Wight County, Virginia.[1]
On 6 Oct 1757, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, the LWT of Edward Hail deceased was proven by Elizabeth Hail, executrix, and by the oath of Benjamin Pynes and John Cook as witnesses. Edward's LWT was signed on 19 Sep 1757 and witnessed by Benjamin Pynes, John Cook, and Thomas Hail. Joel Hail was a named son. See Edward Hale Jr (abt.1701-bef.1757).
On 26 Feb 1761, a deed for Elizabeth Hale, executrix of Edward Hale deceased of Isle of Wight County, VA, to George Hall a Water Grist Mill and 200 acres of land thereunto belonging which was given to Joseph Clark by the last will and testament of his father William Clark bearing date (17 Jan 1737)... laid off by an order of court dated (25 Aug 1735) by Luke Wiggs and Robert Axsom... land on Gibbses Swamp where the said Water Grist Mill now stands the other acre of land lying on the side of the Dam as Benjamin Clarkmans lives... land of Edward Hale deceased by his last will and testament bearing date (19 Sep 1757). Witnesses John Marshall, Joel Hale, William Richardson, James Hale. Signed Elizabeth Hale.[2]
On 18 Feb 1764, a deed for William Pines and his wife Jane of Isle of Wight County, VA, to William Thomas. 200 acres adjoining Sewards Swamp beginning at a tree of Elizabeth Hale's land... Samuel Simmons land... Benjamin Hale's third. Signed Wm Pynes and Jane Pynes. Witnesses Joel Haile, John Thomas, and Philip Moody Jr.[3]
On 15 Feb 1775, a deed for Jesse Haile of Hertford County, NC, from Cader Cherry and Judah Cherry his wife, for land in Bertie County, NC. Description; Cashy Swamp, Elisha Holders corner, Edward Wilsons corner, William Cherrys line. Witnessed Joel Haile and Edward Wilson.[4]
On 22 Sep 1778 a land survey, and then on 25 Mar 1780 a grant was issued for 251 acres to Joel Hale in Hertford County, NC.[5]
In 1779, tax records for James Hale, Joel Hale and Reuben Hale in Hertford County, NC. Nearby in Bertie County, NC, tax records for Jesse Hale and Jonas Hale in 1781.[6]
On 28 Jan 1782, in Cumberland County, NC, Joel Hail was appointed overseer of road from Mill Creek to Wake line.[7]
On 1 Apr 1784, in Cumberland County, NC, for List of Taxables, Joel Haile entered one hundred acres of land joining his own line. He also entered one hundred acres of land joining two of his own lines. And he had a third entry for one hundred and fifty acres of land joining his own line.[8]
In 1787, in Cumberland County, NC, Joel Hails was juror.[9]
On 22 Jan 1787, in Cumberland County, NC, for List of Taxables, Danil Hailes entered 25 acres of land joining Jones Woods line and Joel Hailes line. [10]
On 7 Nov 1787, in Cumberland County, NC, for List of Taxables, Joel Hails entered 36 acres of land joining his own line and Woods line.[11]
On the 1790 Census, Joel Hayle was enumerated in Cumberland County, NC. Listed together; Joel Hayle, Daniel Hayle, Hosey Hayle, and James Hayle. A second James Hayle is listed near the above group.[12]
On 4 May 1792, in Cumberland County, NC, for List of Taxables, Joel Haile entered 100 acres of land on waters of Mill Creek joining his own line and Hosea Hailes line.[13]
