Biography

William was born c.1812 in Berkshire.[1]

He married (1st) Elizabeth Young in 1837 in Windsor, Berkshire.[2] They were the parents of :

  1. Mary Ann b.c.1839 [3][1]
  2. Jane b.c.1842 [1]

1841 : In Sunninghill, Berkshire : William Hakes (bricklayer, age 20) with (presumed) wife Elizabeth (age 30) and daughter Mary (age 3), all b. in county.[3]

He married (2nd) Jane Cannon in 1846.[4] They were the parents of :

  1. William b.c.1847 [1]
  2. Jenette b.c.1851 [1]

1851 : In Sunninghill, Berkshire : William Hakes (ag. labourer, age 39) with wife Jane (age 38), children Mary Ann (11), Jane (9), William (4) and Jenette (3 mths), and stepdaughter Emily Cannon (11).[1]

Research Notes

There is a 10-year discrepancy between William's age on the 1841 census and the 1851 census. Nonetheless, given the location in Sunninghill, and the daughter Mary, it seems likely that this is the same man.

England Select Marriages is a less-than-reliable source, and further evidence is needed to confirm the name of William's first wife.
