Biography

Thomas Haines was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

Thomas Haines (c1776-1859), arrived Sydney per ship Morley (1) 1817 Tried Kent Assizes at Dover 5/8/1816 on 8 charges relating to forged 5 pound bank note. Sentenced for “having forged banknotes” & sentenced 14 years transportation Arrived on convict Ship Morley 10/4/1817 Carpenter, 5’9” tall, ruddy complexion, brown hair & hazel eyes

Received Ticket of Leave (TOL) 11/12/1823 at Camden Thomas granted Certificate of Freedom (COF): #30/746 dated 1/11/1830

Thomas was a Government Servant of John Macarthur at Parramatta in 1822. He went on to be a successful timber merchant and builder. He employed a housekeeper, servant, carpenter and a labourer. He also owned a horse and 4 cattle.

He worked at the Female Orphan School from 1.4.1828 to 30.6.1828 receiving 10 pounds 11 shillings and 7 pence.

Thomas owned approximately ½ an acre of land at the corner of Grose and Villiers streets Parramatta, which he obtained by a Town Grant on 30.11.1841. He also owned land in Marsden and Ross streets, Parramatta.

Thomas was joined in Australian by his sister, Keturah Hilder and his eldest son, Thomas who came as free settlers.

Married Elizabeth after his first wife died in England

Buried in May Hill Cemetery, Parramatta (Section C, Row 1 Grave No. 18)
