Biography

European Aristocracy
Baudoin IV Hainaut was a member of the aristocracy in Europe.

Baudouin de Hainaut (later Baudouin IV "le Bâtisseur" Comte de Hainaut) was born in about 1110 and was the son of Baudouin III Comte de Hainaut and his wife Yolande van Gelre. [1]

Accession as Comte de Hainaut

Baudouin succeeded his father in 1120 as Comte de Hainaut but was a minor for several more years (until about 1124/25). [1]

Marriage and Family

In about 1130, Baudouin IV Comte de Hainaut married Alix (Alidis / Adelaide / Alice) de Namur, who was the daughter of Ermesinde de Luxembourg and her second husband Godefroi Comte de Namur. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Alix de Namur and Baudoin de Hainaut had at least seven children together - and potentially two other daughters (Eustache and Berta): [1]

  1. Yolande de Hainaut - who first married Ives II de Nesle Comte de Soissons, and later married Hugues IV Come de Saint Pol
  2. Baudouin de Hainaut (1st) - who died before about 1150
  3. Agnes de Hainaut - who married Raoul Seigneur de Coucy
  4. Laurette de Hainaut = who first married Dirk van Aalst and later married Bouchard IV Seigneur de Montmorency
  5. Godefroi de Hainaut - who died 7 Apr 1163
  6. Baudouin de Hainaut (2nd) - who married Marguerite de Flandre
  7. Henri de Hainaut - who married Maria van Peteghem
  8. Eustache
  9. Berta

Count Baudouin de Hainaut also had three other children by an unknown mistress. [1]

Death and Succession

His wife Alix de Namur died in July 1169, and Count Baudouin died two years later, on about 6 Nov 1171, and was buried at the Monastery of Sainte-Marie in Binche. [1]

Their son Baudouin succeeded his father as Baudouin V Comte de Hainaut. [1]
