Franklin Haffa was born in Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa on the 2nd of Sep 1881[1] to Abraham Haffa and Rebecca Holdiman.

DR. FRANK A HAFFA DIES; MEMBER OF PIONEER FAMILY[8]
Services are pending at the Locke funeral home for Dr. Frank A. Haffa, 83, of 111 Walnut Ct., retired Waterloo dentist who died Wednesday at his apartment of complications indient to advanced age.
He was born in Waterloo on sep 2, 1881, the son of Abraham and Catherine Haffa. He retired from dental practice in 1921 and went into business. He founded the Walnut Realty Co., which operates the Walnut Court apartments. Dr. Haffa was an Episcopalian.
Northwestern Grad
He was graduated from the University of Iowa and later from Northwestern University, where he received his degree in dentistry in 1902. He was a member of the Half Century club of Northwestern University.
Surviving is one brother, Dr. Henry H. Haffa, of 112 Lafayette St. He was preceded in death by both is parents. Both he and his brother, who is also a graduate of Northwestern Unveristy, practiced dentistry in Waterloo. Dr. Frank Haffa's offices were at the corner of Commerical and Fourth Streets until the Pioneer building (now the Black Hawk Building) was erected.
He practiced dentistry in Parkersburg for three years before returning to Waterloo.
Father was a builder
His father was an early day contractor in Waterloo. He built the old city hall, recently torn down; the Lafayette and Smith, Lichty & Hillman buildings and the building that houses the New York Fashion and Larry's Clothes Stores.
The body has been taken to Cedar Rapids for creamtion and services will be conducted in Waterloo at a later date. The Lock funeral home has charge of arrangements.

Manslaughter conviction

Waterloo - The estate of Arvey C.. Leeper has field suit for $20,000 against Dr. Frank A Haffa, Waterloo dentist, as a result of Leeper's gun wound death last June 7. Dr. Haffa is free on bond pending Supreme Court determination of his appeal from an eight year manslaughter sentence in Leeper's death.
COURT AFFIRMS HAFFA CONVICTION FOR MANSLAUGHTER[10]
The Iowa Supreme Court Tuesday affirmed the manslaughter conviction and eight-year sentence of Dr. Frank A Haffa, 74 year old retired Waterloo dentist.
Dr. Haffa, a well-to-do property holder, has been free on $16,000 bond since he was convicted by a jury in 1953 for the fatal shooting of Arvey C. Leeper, 56, Waterloo painter.
One of the points on which Dr. Haffa's attorneys based their appeal was that the state had not proved beyond reasonable doubt that Dr. Haffa was not acting in self defense when he shot Leeper outside the Haffa Suburban home.
The high court said:
"The state is not required to prove by direct evidence that the killing was not self-defense but may properly resort to circumstantial evidence."
In addition to being sentenced to an eight-year prison term, Dr. Haffa also was fined $1,000 by District Judge Shannon B. Charlton of Waterloo.
TO BEGIN PRISON SENTENCE[11]
Waterloo - Dr. Frank A Haffa, 73, retired dentist, left Waterloo early Tuesday for Fort Madison to begin an eight year term in Iowa State Prison on a manslaughter conviction.
Released on Parole[12]
Des Moines - Dr. Frank A Haffa, 76, retired Waterloo dentist who has been serving an eight year prison term for manslaughter, has been released on parole, the State Board of Parole said Wednesday. Haffa was convicted by a District Court jury in Waterloo of fatally shooting Arvey C Leeper on June 6, 1953.
