Sir Alexander Guthrie was killed in Action during the War of the League of Cambrai at the Battle of Flodden Field.
European Aristocracy
Sir Alexander Guthrie was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Early Life

Alexander Guthrie's date of birth is a rough estimate. It assumes that he was aged 21 when he gained the lands of Kincaldrum in 1466.

Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie was the son of Sir David Guthrie 1st Baron of Guthrie and Janet Dundas. [1]

Family

Sir Alexander had only one known full sibling:

  1. Elizabeth Guthrie, married Alexander Maule, son of Sir Thomas Maule, and his first wife Elizabeth Lindsay. They were the ancestors of the Earls of Panmure. [2] She died about 1526, having had issue of three children. [3]

He also had a natural half-brother;

  1. Malcolm Guthrie of Balnabreich. [1]

Sir Alexander Guthrie is generally believed to have married married Margaret Lyon, daughter of John Lyon, 3rd Lord Glamis and Elizabeth Scrymgeour. [4]

Children of Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie and Margaret Lyon:

  1. David Guthrie, Younger of Guthrie d. 9 Sep 1513. [1]
  2. Alexander Guthrie, who succeeded his father as 4th of Kincaldrum. [2]
  3. George Guthrie of Kincreich. [2]
  4. John Guthrie, 1st of Hiltoun, ancestor of the Guthrie Barons of Craigie. [2]
  5. Elizabeth Guthrie who married John Ogilvy, son of David Ogilvy, 6th of Inverquharity. [2][5]

Possessions

Sir Alexander Guthrie, son of Sir David Guthrie, 1st of Guthrie and 2nd of Kincaldum, was designed of Kincaldrum during the lifetime of his father. On 07 February 1466 (1467 Old Style), he obtained a charter of Kincaldrum, from Sir Thomas Wemyss, by which the lands were to be held of the barony of Lour for payment of a red rose on the ground thereof, at the Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist in name of blench ferme. This charter proceeds on an instrument of resignation, granted by Sir Alexander's grandmother, Mary of Guthrie (she is called Marjory in the charter of Kincaldrum in 1446), relict of Sir Alexander Guthrie of Kincaldrum, and Mr Alexander Guthrie, her brother, in favour of the said Sir Thomas Wemyss, the superior of the lands, dated 06 February, 1466 (1467 Old Style). (Reg. Epis. Br., I., 42.) [1]

Sir Alexander Guthrie bought the estate of Ballindean in 1468-9. [1]

On 25 September 1472, Sir Alexander Guthrie obtained a charter under the Great Seal, upon the resignation by his father, of the lands and barony of Lour. [1]

Litigation

In 1478, Sir Alexander Guthrie of Kincaldrum was charged by the Abbot and Convent of Cupar before the Lords of Council and Session. The allegations concerned a mill built on Kincaldrum, and the withholding the multures of the corn of the same: The Abbot and Convent of Cupar declared that the barony of Kincaldrum was thirled to their mill of Kincreich. (Acta. Dom. Con., 3 and 69.) [1]

Sir Alexander Guthrie was a member of the jury at an inquest on 05 May 1506, and a witness on 08 September of that same year. [1]

Death & Legacy

Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie died on 9 September 1513 at Flodden Field, Northumberland, England, killed in action. He died along with his eldest son, David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie, and three of his brothers-in-law, David, William and George Lyon. [1]

He was succeeded as Baron of Guthrie by his grandson, Andrew Guthrie 3rd of Guthrie and as Laird of Kincaldrum by his second son Alexander Guthrie, 4th of Kincaldrum. [1]

Research Notes

Sir Alexander Guthrie is generally believed to have married married Margaret Lyon, daughter of John Lyon, 3rd Lord Glamis and Elizabeth Scrymgeour. [4][6]

However, on 10 June 1495 this Margaret Lyon was contracted to marry James Rynd, younger of Broxmouth with a tocher of 400 merks. [3] Burke's Landed Gentry also states that she married James Rhynd, younger of Broxmouth, but makes no mention of any marriage to Sir Alexander Guthrie. [7]

If this entry is correct, and the date of the marriage contract does seem to be coherent with those of her elder sisters, then her children with Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie must have been born at the earliest, starting 1496. This would mean that David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie, could have been at the most seventeen years old when he was killed on 9 September 1513 at Flodden Field, which is not impossible. However, it would also mean that there was only an average of 18 years per generation between the birth of John Guthrie, 1st of Hiltoun (born at the earliest in 1500 if he was their fourth son) and the birth of his great (x3) grandson, the Rev James Guthrie of Hiltoun on 07 September 1590. This assumes that the Hiltoun lineage is correct.

Another possibility is that Sir Alexander Guthrie married a different Margaret Lyon, perhaps an undocumented aunt of the Margaret Lyon who contracted marriage with James Rynd, younger of Broxmouth on 10 June 1495. Alternatively, the mother of his children may not have been recorded.

We might imagine David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie just being old enough to accompany his father, Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie to go to war, perhaps as his squire. The fact that the other three sons survived could suggest that they were not at the battle, being considered to be too young to go to fight?

Possible (speculative) timeline:

10 June 1495: Margaret Lyon contract of marriage with James Rhynd, Younger of Broxburn.

March 1496: Possible son born to Margaret Lyon and James Rhynd, Younger of Broxburn.

March 1496: Margaret Lyon is widowed.

May 1496: Margaret Lyon marries as her second husband, Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie.

February 1497: David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie born.

1512: David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie is aged 15 and marries daughter of Ferquhed MacIntosh.

1513: Birth of a son, Andrew Guthrie, 3rd Baron of Guthrie to David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie & daughter of Ferquhed MacIntosh.

09 September 1513 Sir Alexander Guthrie, 2nd Baron of Guthrie & his son, David Guthrie, younger of Guthrie killed at Flodden.

Hi John,

Yes, I totally concur with you that the time frame is far tighter than I had expected given the reference that you found to the marriage of Margaret Lyon. I initially thought that it was impossible for this Margaret Lyon to be the correct wife of Sir Alexander Guthrie. However, it might just fit in the timeline.

I think there is still a problem with Margaret Lyon. If their eldest son was old enough to fight at Flodden and have at least one child, who succeeded his grandfather, then even if Margaret. Lyon and Alexander Guthrie married in 1496, then the time frame is very tight?

Guthrie-1146 and Guthrie-60 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, and both died at Flodden Field. Different birth dates but neither are sourced and it is likely he was born much earlier. He succeeded to his father's estates in 1474 presumably as an adult. These 2 profiles are the same, please merge them.
