Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)

Hannah Chapman was the daughter of Joseph Gurney and Jane Chapman. She was born at Norwich, Norfolk on 9 February 1787.[1][2]

Hannah married Jonathan Backhouse of Darlington, Durham at Norwich, Norfolk on 24 April 1811. The Quaker marriage record describes her as daughter of Joseph Gurney, banker of Norwich, and Jane; and her husband as a banker of Darlington, County Durham, son of Jonathan Backhouyse of Darlington, banker, and Ann.[3] They had the following children:

  • Jonathan, born at Blackwell near Darlington, County Durham on 5 September 1812 and died there on 17 September 1820[4]
  • Jane Gurney, born at Norwich, Norfolk on 23 May 1814[4]
  • Ann, born at Exmouth, Devon on 31 December 1815[4]
  • Joseph, born at Norwich, Norfolk on 15 September 1817, died at Darlington, County Durham on 23 November 1824[4]
  • Henry, born at Norwich, Norfolk on 15 July 1819, died at Tottenham, Middlesex on 16 April 1836 and was buried at Winchmore Hill Quaker burial ground[4]
  • Edmund, born at Darlington, County Durham on 28 November 1824[4]

Hannah died on 6 May 1850 and is buried at the Friends Burial Ground in Darlington, County Durham.[5] Her death was registered at Darlington in the second quarter of 1850.[6]

Travels

Hannah and Jonathan visited fellow Quakers in Bucks, Pennsylvania, in 1830.[7]
