Biography

Annie, born in 1882, was the eldest daughter of George Gulston and Emily Anderson.[1] In 1911 she lived with her parents in Shropshire, England, where her father was the director of a lime works.[2]

Annie's mother and sister had married brothers. Her Aunt Agnes and Uncle Alan lived at Derwydd, the family estate in Carmarthenshire, Wales.[3] Annie's only sibling, Nona, died in 1906, followed by Aunt Agnes in 1913, her father in 1915, and her other Stepney-Gulston uncle, Francis, in 1917. At some point after her father's death, she and her mother moved to Derwydd. They continued to live there after her Uncle Alan's death in 1919. Annie Hyndman, Annie's former nurse, also lived at Derwydd, dying there in 1939 at 83.[4]

During World War One, Annie served as the Assistant County Secretary, Carmarthenshire Branch, British Red Cross Society.[5] In recognition of her work with the Red Cross, she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1919.[6]

After the war, she was a Justice of the Peace[7] until at least 1954.[8]She was also involved with the Girl Guides; she was Carmarthenshire's first County Commissioner and designed the county standard.[9]

Annie died in 1966 after a long life of service to her community.[10]

Derwydd and its gardens are available today for special occasions and events.
