Biography

Alfred emigrated to Australia 2 years before his parents and the children they travelled with aboard the 'Glentanner' departing from Plymouth 23 August 1855, arriving at Port Adelaide 26 November 1855. The arrival was reported in the South Australian Register Tuesday 27 November 1855. Alfred is listed as a Mason. 24 years old, native of Bitton, Gloucester. He travelled with his sister Mary Anne Gully listed as 20 years old and worked as a Servant. He also had his 27 year old wife Elizabeth Perriman and their infant child, also called Mary with them.

Alfred and Elizabeth Gully had six more children born in Adelaide. The youngest of those children Robert Samuel (1866-1908) and his wife Ruth sadly lost their son William during WW1.

William Alfred Gully of the 16th Battalion Australian Infantry was killed in action in France on 5th August 1917 aged 22 years. He was first wounded at Gallipoli on 5 May 1915. His arm was hit with bomb shcrapnel, he was shor again in the arm a year later then finally killed in action on the above date. He is buried in the Messines Ridge British Cemetery in Belgium. 71.66E, SSP.1982. See his profile for army records and photo.

Alfred committed suicide by taking a dose of spirits of salts at his home in Halifax Street, Adelaide in 1900.
