In 1915 at her own expense Lucy travelled to Europe and helped at a French Red Cross Military Hospital.[2]
In 1921 Lucy founded the NSW Association of Registered Medical Women with Dr Harriet Biffin. [3]
In 1921 Lucy & Dr Biffen opened the New Hospital for Women & Children in a house in Surrey Hills, NSW. The 2 women took on the early financial burden of the hospital. In 1925 the hospital was moved to Redfern & renamed the Rachel Forster Hospital for Women and Children. [4]
1941 Lucy announced her next project and in 1946 the Lucy Gullett Convalescent Home was opened in Bexley, NSW.
Lucy lived with her sister Minnie. Minnie passed away in 1943. Lucy then relied on her friend for support as she suffered from nephritis. Mid 1949 Lucy had a stroke. Lucy passed away 12 November 1949 in the Rachel Forster Hospital.
She was buried in the family grave at Gore Hill Cemetery. Her estate was worth over £15,000 and majority was left to her family. [5], [6]
In Chisholm, ACT, Australia there is a Lucy Gullett Circuit in her honour.
As of 2014 the Rachel Forster hospital was still standing, sadly covered in graffiti, protesters have tried to save the building for his historical significance.
