Biography

Mary of Guise (1515-60), daughter of Claude, Duke of Guise, became the wife of James V of Scotland in 1538, and was the mother of Mary Queen of Scots[1]. She was Queen consort of Scotland from 18 May 1538 to 14 December 1542.

Origins

Marie de Guise was born on 22 November 1515 at Bar-le-Duc, capital of the Duchy of Bar, which by that time had merged with the Duchy of Lorraine. She was the eldest daughter of Claude, duc de Guise, and his wife Antoinette de Bourbon-Vendôme. Her father was the head of the Guise family, a powerful cadet branch of the house of Lorraine, which played a prominent role in the Wars of Religion which devastated France in the 16th century. Her mother was the sister of Charles de Bourbon, prince du sang, future grandfather of Henri IV.

First marriage

Mary of Guise married Louis d'Orléans, duke of Longueville, on 4 August 1734. The couple had two children:

  1. Francis, duke of Longueville (1535-1551), had no issue
  2. Louis, born 1536 or 1537, died young.

Mary's husband died on 9 June 1537 in Rouen.

Queen of Scots

Mary, widowed at 20, attractive and rich, was remarried on 12 June 1538 to James V, King of Scots, whose first wife Madeleine de Valois had recently died and wanted a second French bride. They had three children:

  1. James, Duke of Rothesay (22 May 1540 - 21 April 1541)
  2. Robert, Duke of Albany (12 April - 21 April 1541)
  3. Mary, Queen of Scots (born 8 December 1542).

James V died on 14 December, six days after his daughter Mary's birth.

Mary of Guise then engaged in a power struggle with James Hamilton, 3d Earl of Arran (circa 1517-75), who had been appointed regent for the infant queen.

In 1548 she arranged her daughter's betrothal to the French Dauphin. Mary secured Arran's resignation and succeeded him as regent in 1554.

Mary of Guise fought the expansion of the presbyterian religion in Scotland, even calling French troops to her aid. As a consequence she was violently denounced by John Knox. Protestants rebelled more and more against her.

Mary died of dropsy at Edinburgh castle on 11 June 1560. She was 44 years old. Her body was shipped to France in 1561. She was interred at the abbey Saint-Pierre-des-Dames in Reims.
