Biography

Thomas Guion was born in New York, the son of Jonathan Guion and Phebe Lyon.[1][2] He arrived in Dearborn County, Indiana in the first decade of the 19th century. He was a prominent merchant and businessman of the western part of the country for many years. He settled and platted a town and named it Guionville near the present place of Milton.[3] Thomas was appointed postmaster of Guionville in 1837.[4] He remained prominent in the affairs of the county and represented Dearborn County in the Indiana State Legislature.[5]

Thomas Guion was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. His name appeared in 1827 listed among members of Lawrenceburg Lodge #4, F. & A. M. and again in 1829 as a representative member of the Jefferson Lodge #3, F. & A. M. Thomas was among the founders and first officers of the Hopewell Lodge #80, F & A. M., organized in 1848 in the Town of Dillsborough, Indiana. This lodge was near the place he had recently erected a stately home.[6]

Thomas Guion would reside in Dillsborough for the remainder of his days. He was described among peers as "a man of moral excellence and worth" and as one "worthy of imitation, by following his virtues."[7] His death occurred at an impressive age in 1871.[8]
