Biography

Ellen Guffy served in the United States Civil War.

Ellen was born in 1833. During the US Civil War, she worked with Miss Kate M. Scott nursing soldiers of the 105th Pennsylvania Infantry and was quarantined due to exposure and infection with smallpox during that period.^[1] After the war, Ellen supported herself as a dressmaker and took on the cause of liquor temperance in Brookville, Pennsylvania.^[2] She was approved for a pension on the basis of her nursing service and every three months received $36, which was the standard rate for nurse volunteers.
