Harald In the "Black" is said to have been born in the Hebrides, Scotland; the son of Gudrød Eriksen (King of Man b: 0930 in Norway) and Unknown Of Islay (Kvinne from Islay Queen of Man b: c. 0950). It should be noted that "The Black" was a fairly common epithet among these people at this time.
We can locate Harald the Black most clearly in historical literature, where he is named as the father of Godred Crovan. The Annals of Tigernach in the year 1091 simply notes without comment 'Goffraidh mac Maic Arailt, rí Atha Cliath.' (Godred son of Harald, King of Dublin). [1] In the Welsh collection of Norse pedigrees a genealogy of the kings of Man records - Rhanallt (Reginald) m. Gwythryg (Godred) m. Afloyd (Olaf) m. Gwrthryt (Godred Crovan King of Dublin & Man) mearch m. Harallt ddu (Harald the Black) m. Ifor gamle (Ivar the Old) m. Afloyd (Olaf king of Dublin & York) m. Swtrig (Sitric). [2]
We learn something of Harald the Black through stories told of his son Godred -
from Godred Crovan : a poem composed by Dopnal Sytric, scheld of Godred Crovan, King of the Isle of Man [5]
"Arise o son of Harald the Black, for the son of Sytric sleeps upon the mountain, under the mossy rock; prepare thy silver lance ..... Godred Crovan, son of Harald the Black, whose name has put to flight armies, arise "

↑ Associate Professor Alison Downham Moore of Sydney University has made proposals reassessing the person of Eirik Bloodaxe, proposing that Eiríkr, King of York from 947–948 and 952–5, was a ruler (war lord would be more appropriate) in the Viking Kingdom of the Isles (Hebrides, Islands of the Firth of Clyde & the Isle of Man); but questions that this Eiríkr is the same character as Eric Bloodaxe. Downham argued that Eric of the Kingdom of the Isles was of the Uí Ímair Dynasty, rather than a son of Harald Fairhair (Harald Hårfagre Halfdansson (c. 0850 - c. 0933).

Noteringar

Guðrøðarson-2 and Gudrödsson-72 appear to represent the same person because: Guðrøðarson-2 is a profile that had suffered through a series of unfortunate merges. It carried a copy/past Vestfold genealogy which no longer matched the merged profile & had been given a battle/death place which did not match the death date entered.
Otherwise, name, birth & death dates & birth place match for the proposed merge

Godfreidsson-1 and Gudrödsson-72 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same spouse, same death - research & bio needed for both profiles - merge all spouse bios too
Olafsson-319 and Godfreidsson-1 appear to represent the same person because: we just need to merge all the profiles for "Harald the Black" then decide how they should be linked to others active in this area at the time - there are a number of alternative views re relationships
