John Gruelle was the creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. He was a famous writer and cartoonist. His obituary was published internationally.

John Barton 'Johnny' Gruelle was born on December 24, 1880 in Arcola, Douglas, Illinois, United States, son of Alice Jeanett Benton[1] and Richard Buckner Gruelle (1851–1914).[2] His siblings were Prudence J and Justine Carlyle.

In 1900, at 19 he was living with his 49 year old father and 45 year old mother at 417 Tacoma Ave, Center, Marion, Indiana. He had finished nine years of school and could read, write, and speak English. He family owned the farm free and clear. Prudence was 16 and Justin was 10. He was already and employed Artist.[3]

Family

John (20) married Myrtle Swann (16) (born on August 16, 1884) on March 24, 1901 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States. Their children were:

By 1910, he was married ten years to Myrtle and they were living at 1501 Mars Ave, Rockport Cuyahoga, OH. He was an artist in the cartoons industry. The family was renting a house. Marcella was seven years old.[4]

In 1920, John (49) family was renting a home at on East Ave in Ward 1, Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut. He was working on his own account at home. Marcella had died five years prior when she contracted diphtheria at the age of 13. Worth was 7 and Richard was 2. They had a radio set.[5]

In 1930, John (49) family bought a home at worth $32,000 on Shore Front Park. He was working as an independent artist he owned studio magazine work. Myrtle was 44, Worth 17, his 17 year old bride Corrine was 17 and Richard was 12.[6] John died prior to the next census.

Artistry

By the time the 40s decade was over seven million copies of the Gruelle's Raggedy books had sold.[7]

Death

John died of heart failure in his sons home on January 9, 1938 in Miami Springs, Dade, Florida, United States, aged 57. He was buried in Silvermine Cemetery, New Canaan, Fairfield County, Connecticut.[2] [8]

Johnny Gruelle was memorialized in news media around the USA and other countries. Even Raggedy Ann was recognized for her creators death in The Californian.[9]
