Here’s my theory about the Killingworth Samuel Griffin born in 1702, although there are no documents to prove it. However, there is DNA evidence that points to the Edward Griffin 1602 line from Flushing, Queens County, New York. I found a potential road map at the late Bradley Orlo Griffin’s Samuel Griffin Genealogy Blog. http://samuelgriffingenealogy.blogspot.com/

In a 2013 post, he wrote about the possible Samuel connection to Edward Griffin.

“...concerning Edward Griffin. The two most widely regarded and well-researched sites are those created by Theresa Griffin and Paul Griffin. Recently I have been involved in reviewing updates on the Griffin DNA project. The more material that is assembled, the stronger the link has become between the family of Samuel Griffin of Killingworth and Edward Griffin of Flushing, New York. At this point in time there is little doubt that we are descendants of Edward. The information seems to point to a line of Samuel / Unknown/ Edward / Edward of Flushing.”

Griffin is my mother’s maiden name and I have a solid tree DNA matched line to Samuel Griffin. If Samuel was connected to Edward, I thought I would get some good matches with other descendants of Edward. And I did. Gordon Griffin was the only Y-DNA tester descendent available on Edward Griffin (Griffin-434) WIKITREE page. Although he didn’t have a GED match number to compare, he was closely related to Angus Griffin who had a number. The result was most encouraging. Largest segment = 4.8 cM Total Half-Match segments (HIR) 55.3cM (1.541 Pct).

That on its own was a good indicator that I was on the right trail. But, I needed to confirm with other descendants of Edward to make me a believer. I tested all of his sons and sons of his sons with a significant match rate. At first, I suspected it might be his son Edward’s son, Richard, because of good matches, and he had a Samuel born in 1693 who kind of disappeared. But he reportedly had the wrong wife.

Long story short. My lead suspect for the missing link was Edward’s brother John Griffin (Griffin-436) born in 1660. All five descendants listed on his post registered over 30 matches with me, with the highest individual having 11 segments shared. Largest segment = 6.2 cMTotal Half-Match segments (HIR) 41.6cM (1.161 Pct).

The problem was that John Griffin (Griffin-436) didn’t have Samuel listed as his son. But we all know that is not at all unusual for an offspring to fall through the cracks. He had five children listed on his page. Mary Griffin was born in 1700, the next born was Ezekiel, born in 1707. That’s a long space between kids in those days. So my unproven theory is that Samuel 1702 or 05 of Killingworth was a kid who fell through the cracks. So this would be my line.

Edward Griffin 1602- 8th great-grandfather John Griffin 1660-1742 Son of Edward Griffin Samuel Griffin 1705-1752 Son of John Griffin Samuel Griffin 1739-1808 Son of Samuel Griffin Asahel Griffin 1769-1851 Son of Samuel Griffin Sylvester ( Buck) Griffin 1800-1862 Son of Asahel Griffin Edward Edwin Griffin 1828-1904 Son of Sylvester ( Buck) Griffin Francis Marion Griffin 1877-1959 Son of Edward Edwin Griffin William Francis Griffin 1901-1990 Son of Francis Marion Griffin Nila Marie Griffin 1925-2007 Daughter of William Francis Griffin William Ronald James You are the son of Nila Marie Griffin

Update: I think I may be wrong about John Griffin being Samuel Griffin's son, however, I still believe that one of Edward's sons is his father. I'll keep digging and update here. If you have any information please e-mail me at [email address removed]

Grifface-2 and Griffin-1956 appear to represent the same person because: Bio on Griffin-1956 indicates that all these children are siblings, children of Griffin-1956 and Mary Beckwith. The mistaken Mary Averys are also being merged into Mary Beckwith
