Mary was born in 1879^[1] in Hull, Yorkshire, England, where she lived with her parents, John William and Elizabeth, in 1881.^[2] At the age of 12 in 1891, Mary worked as a domestic servant for the Newton family in Sutton with Stoneferry;^[3] in 1901 she worked for the Machins on Princes Avenue.^[4]

She married Thomas Holmes in 1906^[5][6][7] and in 1911 the family lived in Eastrington.^[8]
