Biography

Susanna was a Friend (Quaker)

Susanna is believed to have been born about 1713 to James and Sarah Griffin in Nansemond County, Virginia. Although there is no record yet found of James and his young family in Nansemond, he seems to have been part of a group of friends and relatives with connections first in Nansemond County, Virginia, and later in Chowan and Perquimans counties, North Carolina. These families included the Rountrees, the Spiveys, the Hills, the Copelands, the Speights, the Perrys, the Brinkleys, and others.

The family first appears in North Carolina records in 1717. In July 1717, Thomas Spivey, Sr., and Mary his wife sold 200 acres in Chowan County, NC, to James Griffin for £8. The land was on the north side of Catherine Creek Swamp in Meherrin Neck, adjacent to Spivey, Francis Roundtree, and Thomas Brooks. Witnesses were William Hill, Abner Spivey, and Thomas Roundtree.[1]

First Marriage

On the 5th day of the 11th month of 1731/32 (5 Jan 1731/32) Benjamin Newby and Susanna Griffin appeared before the Perquimans Monthly Meeting to declare their intention of taking each other as husband and wife.[2] A month later, on the 16th day of the 12th month of 1731 (16 Feb 1731/32), Susanna Griffin and Benjamin Newby appear before the Perquimans Monthly meeting for a second time desiring an answer to their proposed marriage. The Friends Meeting finding no objection grants the couple leave to marry.[3] Susannah married Benjamin Newby at the home of her father, James Griffin, in Chowan County, North Carolina on the 16th day of the 12th month of 1731 (16 Feb 1731/32).[4][5]

Susanna's first marriage end on the 28th day of the 11th month of 1739 (28 Feb 1739/40) with the death of her first husband, Benjamin Newby.[6] His will identifies his wife and their three children. (See table below). [7]

In addition to appointing a committee of Friends to inquire into the clearness and conversations of the couple, the committee was charges with inquiring into the arrangement which have been made for the children of Susanna's first marriage.[8] On the 5th day of the 12th month of 1740/41, Susanna Newby and James Overman appeared before the Symons Creek Monthly Meeting desiring an answer to their proposed marriage. Finding no objections, the Friend's grant the couple leave to marry.[9]
