James Joseph Grenier was born on September 25, 1889, in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada, his father, Theodule, was 35 and his mother, Euphemia, was 36. He married Anna Prudence "Prudy" O'Hagan in 1907. They had 12 children in 19 years. He died on June 20, 1953, in his hometown at the age of 63.
