Biography

William was born in 1870. He passed away in 1945.

  • William S. Green, familiarly known about the Richland county courthouse and among friends generally as "Uncle Billy", died early yesterday morning in his apartment at 1430 Marion street from asphyxiation. "Uncle Billy" was out and about the courthouse as usual Saturday afternoon and in apparent good spirits. Early yesterday investigating officers found that he had slashed his wrists late Saturday night and then got in bed, with a gas jet open. He was 76 years old and had been in declining health several years. He was hospitalized twice within the last year, once with a severe attack of pneumonia. Funeral services will be held at McCormick's mortuary at 6:30 Monday afternoon, followed by interment in Elmwood cemetery. Mr. Green was the son of the late Metiah and Marion Green. His wife, the former Miss Jennie Burnside, died two years ago this fall. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. William B. Lawrence of Columbia; two brothers, James M. Green of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Metiah B. Green of Columbia, and a number of nieces and nephews. In recent years Mr. Green had served the clerk of court as jury bailiff. He also had served long periods as a member of the Richland county board of registration. Early in the 1900's he also served Richland county as coroner, he having been elected to the office for two two-year terms.
