Lorne Greene, OC, was a Canadian radio broadcaster, actor, singer, and television personality, best known for his role as the Cartwright family patriarch, Ben Cartwright, on the 1959-1973 western-themed television series, Bonanza.

At the time of the 1921 Canada Census, he was listed with his parents, Daniel Greenblatt and Dora Grinovsky, living in Nepean, Ontario.[1]
After graduating from Queen's University in 1937 and studying drama in New York, he joined the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation), Toronto, as a news broadcaster. He served as a Flying Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War Two. After the war, he returned to radio and acting work in Toronto. In 1952 he relocated to the United States where he pursued an acting career on the stage and on television.
He and his first wife, Rita Hands, were married on September 5, 1940, in Toronto.[2] They had twins, a son and a daughter, in 1945. They divorced in 1960.
He married his second wife, Nancy Ann Deale in Los Angeles, California, on December 17, 1961.[3] They had one daughter.
He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1969 [4] and received an honorary doctorate from Queen's University in 1971.[5]
He died on September 11, 1987 in Los Angeles, California.[6][7]
He is buried in Hillside Memorial Park in Culver City, Los Angeles County, California.[8]
