Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Frances (Green) Coats was a South Carolina colonist.

Mary Green was the daughter of Daniel Green and Sarah Seabrook. She was born March 27th, 1737 in South Carolina.[1]

She married William Coats in 1757 in Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina.[2][3]

Bio 2

William and Frances had seven known children before her husband died in 1783. Their children included:

  1. Ann Coats Stark b. 1757
  2. Priscilla Coats b. 1759
  3. Wilson W Coats b. 1767
  4. Benjamin Watts Coats b.1762
  5. Wilson W. Coats (abt.1767-1822)[4]
  6. Barton Coats b. 1759
  7. James Coats Sr b.1765[4]

Frances is named in his will, 'I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Frances Coates all the Reft and Residue of my Goods Chattles and personal Estate whatsoever Soly Executor of this my Last Will and Testament and I do hearby untterly revoke...' so she died after he did.[5]

Research Notes

This is quite possibly a conflated profile. There is no information showing that Mary, the daughter of Daniel Green, is the same person as Frances the wife of William Coats. Though Mary Green did marry a William Coats, there seems to be several of them and no certainty that this is the one Mary married.

The Coats families of Charleston and Newberry need to be presumed to be different families until documentation is unearthed to show otherwise.

Died 15 December 1784. Camden Dist, South Carolina, SC, USA.
