Doris May Green was born 4 November 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Lewis Abraham Green and Anna (Meltzer) Green Roberts). Her father deserted her mother when she was very young, and she took on the last name of her stepfather, Chester Hoyt Roberts. Her grandparents had an apartment in the South Bronx, New York, and raised her while her mother worked to support them. Doris was influenced both by her mother, as well as by her maternal Uncle Willie. “He came to stay with my mother and then I came to stay with my mother. He taught me about love. He loved me unconditionally.”[1]
Doris married first Michael Emilio Cannata Sr., and they had one son together, Michael E. Cannata Jr. Michael also served as her manager.[1]
Doris married second Charles William Goyen. They did not have children.
Doris was an actress best remembered for her roles as someone's mother, like Frances, the main protagonist's mother-in-law, and as Marie Barone, mother of the namesake Ray Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond.
Doris Roberts died 17 April 2016 in Los Angeles, California.
