Biography

Biography by Fred South 2011
Lenore Ellen Green
Lenore was born in Franklin County, OH, June 22, 1876.[1][2] She had moved to Nebraska with her parents at about nine years of age. On March 4, 1896, Lenore married "Len" William Leonard South at the home of Ephriam Green between Brock and Julian, NE. Len was born September 6, 1871, in Watson, MO. Nora and Len were constantly on the move. Their children were born in 6-7 different communities and they lived in many places in between, sometimes staying just a month or two. Vern, son of Len, named 18 different places they had lived and said even he could not remember all of them. They even moved to Powder River County, MT, where Len tried his hand at farming. This was probably in 1932 or 1933. In 1944, Len and Nora moved back to Montana, to Miles City this time. They lived on Phillips Street, then moved to a duplex at 1306-08 N. Jordan with three of their unmarried children--Florence, Leo, and Don. Len was now 73, but still could not get the desire to move out of his blood. Florence remembers a knock at the door one day and answered it to find a couple who had come to "look at the house." They had noticed a for sale ad in the Miles City Daily Star. Seems that Len had placed it there; he wanted to go back to Nebraska. The major problem was that he and Nora did not own the home; his children did! Len died 6-9-1960. Nora died 3-1-1965. Her funeral was at the Graves Funeral Home in Miles City. Rev. Leonard Harbeson, the Seventh-day Adventist pastor conducted the service. His wife was the soloist and Mae Belle Klamm was the organist. The music they provided was “Asleep in Jesus” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Nora had been in the hospital since February 18. At the time of her death, she had 34 grandchildren, 82 great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren. Her Pallbearers were Donnie Ray South, Robert F. South, David R. South, Jimmie South, Lloyd E. South and Coleman T. South, all grandchildren.

Summary of sources by Steven Lake.
Some of the places that the South's lived were in Polk township of Atchison county, Missouri in 1900,[3] Belvidere in Thayer county, Nebraska in 1910,[4] back in Auburn of Nemaha county, Nebraska in 1920,[5] they were living in Douglas township of Nemaha county in the 1930 US Census,[6]
then they are in Brock in 1940.[7]
Nora and Len had ten children.

  1. Malinda Maud Howell (1897-1982)
  2. Florence May South (1898-1900)

  8. Joey Alfred (1914-2005)
  9. Opal Maxine (1917-1918)

Opal Maxine was the only child not to reach adulthood. She was born on 6 November 1916 and died the next year on Thanksgiving Day, 28 November 1918 of the flu. She is the only member of the South family buried in Sheridan Cemetery in Auburn, Nebraska, where the family was living at the time.
One by one, Nora's children were married. Malinda Maud married Luther Howell in 1918 at Nebraska City. Thomas married Burton Lillian Jackson at Fremont, Iowa in 1924.[8] Floyd married Grace Ethel Majors in 1932 at Miles City, Joey married Margaret Pearl Hardenburger in 1935 and Vern married Jean Elizabeth Ducello in 1936 at Olive, Powder River county, Montana.[9] Erwin married Francina (Maiden Name Unknown) about 1938 in Brock and Leo married Rose Watson in 1954 at Bozeman.[10] Donald Fay was married to Shirley Ann Elliot in 1958 in Bozeman.[11]
Len died in 1960 and Nora died in 1965.[12] Both died in Miles City and each of their bodies were buried in the Custer County Cemetery.[13]
