Elzworth was born in 1923. He was the son of Clarence William Gray (1902-1972) and Frances Matthews.

The 1940^[1] Census records Clarence, Frances and children living on a farm in Evening Shade, Greene County, Arkansas. Clarence worked 52 weeks in 1939 without any declared income. Elzworth, is listed as an unpaid family worker and, although 16, has only completed the 4th grade. Elzworth enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944.^[2] He was 20 years old.

On the 20th of December, 1946, Elzworth Marion married Rosetta Mae Kersey in Greene County, Arkansas.^[3] In 1950,^[4] the couple are living in Sugar Creek, Greene County, Arkansas. They are not living on a farm and Elzworth is listed as unemployed and not looking for work. The couple have a baby boy named Danny.

Elzworth died on 17 February, 2006, at the age of 82. He was buried in the Greene County Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas.^[5]
