John Gray was born in Addingham, Yorkshire, England.

John was born in Addingham, Yorkshire, England, on May 14, 1863. His parents were (Unknown) Grey and Mary (Unknown). The Baptismal Register shows Grey for father, and Mary, "Widow", for mother. John was baptized on July 29, 1865, in Addingham, at Saint Peter.

John married Mary Ellen Brayshaw on April 24, 1886, in Addingham, at Saint Peter. According to the Parish Register, John was a twenty two year old bachelor and "Spinner" residing in Addingham. His father is not named. Mary Ellen is listed as a twenty one year old spinster (no profession) residing in Addingham. Her father is named as William Brayshaw, "Laborer". The witnesses were John Burke and Ann Brayshaw. John and Mary Ellen would have four children. (In the 1911 census, Mary Ellen declares she had four children but one had died).

No definitive record of John's death has been found.
