ix. Adonarim J. Billings; b. 3 Dec 1826 at Newport, Penobscot, Maine; m. Lucinda M. (--?--); m. Anna Elizabeth Clements 7 May 1853 at Waterville, Kennebec, Maine; d. 6 Feb 1900 at Freedom, Waldo, Maine, at age 73. He attended Colby University at Waterville, Maine, and studied medicine at Albany Medical College, Albany, New York, graduating in 1854. He established himself in Freedom, Maine, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was president of the Waldo County Medical Society. In the civil war he was surgeon of the Nineteenth Maine Volunteer Militia; in 1864 surgeon of the board of enrollment of the fifth congressional district, and during President Harrison's administration was on the board of examining surgeons for pensions. He was a Republican in politics, and in 1862 and 1868 was representative to the general court, and in 1866 and 1867 state senator. In 1873 he was appointed state inspector of prisons and jails, and he was surgeon-general on Governor Per- ham's staff. He was again state senator in 1897. He was a member of the Dana B. Carter Post, Grand Army of the Republic, and of the Masonic fraternity. He belonged to the Congregational church in Freedom. He began military service on 5 Aug 1862 at Freedom, Waldo, Maine; Enlisted as a Surgeon on 5 August 1862 at the age of 35. Commission in Company S, 19th Infantry Regiment Maine on 5 Aug 1862. Received a disability discharge from Company S, 19th Infantry Regiment Maine on 11 Jan 1864.
