Biography

Katherine de Grandison[1]

Katharine was the daughter of William, Lord Grandson, and his wife Sibylla de Tresgoz.[2]

By 1328, she had married William, son of William de Montagu & his wife Elisabeth de Montfort. William had succeeded his father in 1319 as Lord Montagu and was summoned to parliament as such on 18 February 1331. He was created Earl of Salisbury on 16 March 1337.[2]

William & Katharine had six children:[2][1]

sons
  1. William de Montagu (born 20 June 1328 in Somerset), married (2) Elizabeth Mohun, daughter of John Mohun, Lord Mohun of Dunster & his wife Joan Burghersh.[2] The 1333 contract for him to marry Alice of Norfolk, daughter of Thomas of Brotherton, was voided[1]and his marriage in 1341 to Joan of Kent, daughter of Edmund of Woodstock, was annulled in 1349.[2]
  2. John de Montagu, younger son[1] (born in London), married Margaret, Baroness Monthermer, about 1341/3.[2]
daughters

William, Earl of Salisbury, died 30 January 1343/4[1] and was buried at Bisham.[2] Katherine, Countess of Salisbury, died testate 23 April 1349.[1][2] She is believed to have been buried in the Bisham Priory for Austin Canons at Bisham, Berkshire. Bisham was the burial place of many earls of Salisbury.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth: "about 1305, England" in datafields as of 14 May 2023; previously, "1304, Ashford, Hertfordshire, England".[3] 1304 was likely an estimated date based on her husband's estimated birth, 1302/3[2] (aged 17 or 18 in 1320).[1] No indication of why "Ashford, Hertfordshire". Richardson has her father "of Ashperton, Herefordshire..." and lots of other places, but none in Hertfordshire.[1]

Name: Grandison is "an anglicisation of Grandson".[4]

Edward III: Legend has it that Montagu's wife Catherine was raped by Edward III, but this story is almost certainly French propaganda. Most of William and Catherine's six children married into the nobility. Modern historians have called William Montague Edward's "most intimate personal friend" and "the chief influence behind the throne from Mortimer's downfall in 1330 until his own death in 1344."[5]

To Do:

  1. She died testate, so look for her IPM.

update - I've finished for now (see "To Do" under #Research Notes). Let me know if there are any additions/changes that are needed.

Hi! I just added myself as a manager. Hope y'all don't mind. Looking at her profile, it could use some TLC & I noticed that none of y'all have a pre-1500 badge. She is my 19x-gr-grandmother (per WikiTree) & I'd like to work on this profile during 2023 - one of my New Year's Resolutions is to work on ancestors' profiles - starting with profiles that I manage. I look forward to working with you on it!

Cheers, Liz
