Biography
Service number 39991 Rifleman A company 2nd Btt 3rd NZRB 1st NZEF. Occupation on enlistment: clerk Commenced duty 3/10/1916 Discharged 30/4/1918 no longer physically fit for service due to wounds received in action.
Charles was reported wounded 6/8/17 by a shell in trenches near Warneton, Belgium fracturing his left tibia and fibula. The upper fragment of the tibia was in front of lower fragment shortening his badly swollen and bruised leg which was extended in hospital with the use of pulleys.[1]
Charles was born in 1895. He is the son of James Gracey and Alice Unknown. He died in 1980. Charles was cremated and rests at Waihi Public Cemetery.
