The 20th Manchesters were engaged on the first day of the battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. By the end of the first day, they had, with 1st Welsh Fusiliers, reached The Rectangle, south of Mametz Wood.
At some point during the battle, Robert was wounded. He died of wounds 26 August 1916[2], and is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery, Danzig Alley, Mametz, France.[3]
He is also commemorated on a monument in the grounds of Fulshaw Hall, Wilmslow, Cheshire, dedicated to the memory of staff of the Refuge Assurance Company who served in the First and Second World War. [4]
