According to Find-a-Grave, Hammond Gowen was born on July 6, 1786 in Medford, Massachusetts, north of Boston.[1] He was the son of William Gowen and Eleanor Cutter.[2]
Hammond Gowan became a merchant in Quebec City, Lower Canada (Quebec). In 1810 he and William Hall, his sister's husband, went into business together. The firm of Hall and Gowen sold hats, lumber and food items, and during the War of 1812 provided uniforms and hats to the military.[3] He also served as a sergeant in Matthew Bell's Troop of Light Cavalry during the War of 1812.[4]
He married 18-year-old Margaret Anderson in 1821. The witnesses were Margaret's parents and Hammond's sister Ellen and brother-in-law William Hall.[5]Margaret died in April 1824, followed on June 15 by their six-month-old son, William Cutter.[6] His second marriage was in 1831 to Margaretta Josepha Ireland.[7]
Hammond Gowen died on April 18, 1864 of "apoplexy" and was buried at Mount Hermon Cemetery, Quebec City. [8]
