John Joseph Gotti Jr. was a notable Italian-American gangster.
He was the fifth child out of the thirteen children born to his parents John Joseph Sr. and Philomena "Fannie" (de Carlo) Gotti. In the 1950 census, John (age 9) was a son in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States.[1] His sister Patricia who was one-year-old at the time of census, was reportedly also born in the Bronx, suggesting that the family had moved to Brooklyn within the last year.
John was affiliated with the Gambino crime family, one of the five notable crime families in New York. At least four of his other siblings were also affiliated with this family.
John Gotti became the boss of the family in 1986.
He was convicted on multiple charges and sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1992. He spent most of his sentence in the United States Penitentiary in Marion, Illinois. John was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, and he was sent to the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri for surgery. The surgery was initially successful, but the cancer was discovered to have returned two years later, and John spent the rest of his life in Springfield.
