Biography
John Gothard was born in England.
John Gothard died young.
John was born in 1830.
John died 1838 when he was 8 years old. He was a victim of the Huskar Colliery disaster. [1] He was buried on 7 July 1838 in Silkstone Church Yard with the other children who died the same day.[2]
Research Note
The age of John Gothard on the Huskar monument is 8 years old. The age of the only possible child shown in the General Registration Online Death indexes is 9 years (the name is spelt 'GATHARD' in the General Registation Online Death index although correct in other sources that point to the same birth.[1][3]).
This causes some doubt about who John's parents were. John may not have been christened, or he may have been one of the children who were christened at Silkstone, but do not appear to be present on the 1841 census:
He was possibly the son of Joseph and Ann Gothard, the child christened on 24 February 1828 at Silkstone, Yorkshire [4] This would mean that John was 10 year old when he died.
It is also possible that his father was Thomas Gothard and mother Harriet Lumb although Thomas was a gardener in 1841 [5] and still in 1861[6] A John Godward, born 30 August 1829, son of Thomas, a gardener of Cawthorn, Yorkshire and Harriet was christened on 30 September 1829 at Silkstone, Yorkshire [7] This child would have been 8 years old at the time of the Huskar Disaster is probably the child that died.
