Wayne Keith Goss MBA LLB DUniv was born in 26th February 1951 at Mundubbera, Queensland, Australia. He was the eldest of six children of Allan Goss, a barber, and Norma Dalton. He grew up at Inala where he was educated at Inala State High School. He graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). [1]
Goss worked as a solicitor and then with the Aboriginal Legal Service before setting up his own practice. [1]
Wayne Goss married Roisin Hirschfeld, daughter of Doctor Konrad Hirschfeld CBE (a Rhodes Scholar in 1927) and granddaughter of Doctor Eugen Hirschfeld (briefly a member of the Legislative Council and a member of the first University of Queensland Senate in 1910). The couple made their home in Brisbane's southern suburbs. [1]
Goss entered state politics as a Labor Party Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1983 for the electoral district of Salisbury and, from 1986 onwards, for Logan. He was elected leader of the opposition in March 1988 and led Labor victoriously into the 1989 state election against the National Party government of Russell Cooper; becoming the first Labor premier of Queensland in over 32 years. As premier, Goss presided over the implementation of many of the reforms of the Fitzgerald Inquiry into police corruption. He was returned as premier in the subsequent 1992 and 1995 elections, however resigned his appointment and moved to the back-benches on 19th February 1996. The Goss government introduced merit-based appointments to the Queensland public service, created new National Parks, decriminalised homosexuality, and appointed Queensland's first female Governor. [1]
After leaving politics at the 1998 election (he did not stand as a candidate) Goss completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Queensland. He was awarded honorary doctorates (DUniv) by the Queensland University of Technology and Griffith University. He served as chairman of the Queensland Art Gallery and chairman of Deloitte Australia. He served on several boards of directors, including a term as a director of the Brisbane Broncos rugby league team. He was an ambassador of the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation. [1]
Goss was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001. [2]
Goss battled a recurrent brain tumour for seventeen years, undergoing four operations to manage it. He passed away, aged 63 years, on 10th November 2014 at home, with his wife and their two children beside him. Ryan and Caitlin, have both attended the University of Queensland and were each awarded Rhodes Scholarships to attend the University of Oxford in 2007 and 2009 respectively. [1]
The rainforest tree genus Gossia in the myrtle family is named after Wayne Goss in honour of his conservation work. [1]
