Biography
Simon Gordon migrated from Russian Empire to United States.
Simon was probably born between 1859 and 1867 (see Research Notes) in a country that was then part of the Russian Empire.[1]
Simon married Yetta Unknown, probably before 1881 (based on the birth of their first child that year), and they had two children (see Research Notes). Yetta died between 1886 (when their second child was born) and 1888 (when Simon remarried).
Simon married Celia Albert in 1888[1]
and they had four children (see Research Notes).
Simon immigrated to the United States, probably in 1890 (see Research Notes).
Simon is believed to have become a naturalized United States citizen, however no record supporting this has been found. A naturalization record for Simon Gordon, who became a citizen in 1892[2]
cannot be his because he had not yet been in the United States long enough to have qualified.
In 1900, Simon (age 41) and Celia (age 34) lived at 223 Madison Street in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Samuel (age 19), Bessie (age 15), Max (shown as Marx, age 9), Louis (age 4), and Rosie (age 1). Simon was a presser, Samuel was an operator on cloaks, and Bessie was an operator on shirts.[1]
In 1905, Simon (age 38) and Celia (age 36) lived at 23 Rutgers Place in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Max (age 15), Louis (age 9), and Rosie (age 6). Two boarders, Barnet Friedman (age 23) and Morris Friedman (age 19), both Russian immigrants, lived with the family. Simon was a tailor and Barnet and Morris were both painters.[3]
In 1910, Simon (age 50) and Celia (shown as Celie, age 40) lived at 646 9th Avenue in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States with children Max (age 20), Louis (age 13), Rose (age 11), and Morris (age 4). Simon did day work as a newspaper laborer and Max was also a newspaperman who described himself as a laborer.[4]
In 1915, Simon (age 55) and Celia (age 45) lived at 628 Hendrin Street in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with children Louis (age 18), Rose (age 15), and Morris (age 9). Simon and Louis were newsdealers.[5]
In 1920, the family's last name is incorrectly shown as Gorman. Simon (age 55) and Celia (age 50) lived at 628 Hendrix Street in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States with children Louis (age 20), Rose (age 19), and Morris (age 14). Simon was a paper salesman, Louis was a salesman with a program company, and Rose was a typewriter in a law office.[6]
Research Notes
Birth
Simon's birth date varies, as shown on different records:
Max Gordon, born January 1891 in the Russian Empire
Louis Gordon, born December 25, 1897 in New York, United States, died January 27, 1964 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States
Rose (Gordon) Seiden, born August 1899 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, died July 1978 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States
Morris "Maurice" Gordon, born December 11, 1905 in Manhattan, New York, New York, United States, died February 14, 1987 in Fort Lauderdale, Broward, Florida, United States
Immigration
The date when Simon arrived in the United States varies, as shown on different records:
about 1890 in 1900 census,[1] 1905 census,[3] and 1910 census[4]
Possible Lithuanian Records
Records have been found showing Zelman Gordon (maybe Simon?):
Divorced from Ette September 13, 1890 in Kupiskis, Pasvalys, Panevezys, Kaunas at age 35. His father was Itsyk.[7] If Ette is his first wife, Yetta, this fits the date of his second marriage to Celia before the birth of their first child.
Different Persons Named Simon Gordon
There are two or three other persons named Simon Gordon, all Russian immigrants and close in age. One in particular, Simon Philip Gordon, is more likely to be confused with this Simon Gordon than the others because he also had a wife named Yetta and some of the children in both families also had the same names. Simon Philip Gordon and his family lived in Maryland after arriving in the United States.

Divorce record GORDON, Zelman (father Itsyk) + GORDON, Ette from the town Kupiskis, 30 September 1890, Pasvalys
Box Tax Payers Kupiskis 1892: GORDON, Zelman (Itsko), GORDON, Shimel (Zelman), GORDON, Movsha (Zelman) all missing and poor
Zelman could be Simon, Shimel could be his son Samuel and Movsha could be his son Max. Samuel was just a child and Max a baby, so I doubt they were taxpayers, but maybe they were listed with their father (unfortunately records are in cyrillic). The fact they were missing fits with the supposed date of emigration.
