Charles William King Golding was born on 21st September 1914 in Randwick, New South Wales, Australia. He was the second son of Albert Golding and Ivy Boon. [1]
Charles married Olga Abbot in 1938 in Sydney. [2]
On 24th October 1939 Charles was commissioned in the Second Australian Imperial Force and allocated to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion. [3] Earning promotion to Captain, he was appointed Second-in-Command B Company for the battalion's first campaign, in Libya. Thankfully, he missed the subsequent disastrous Greece-Crete Campaign of April-May 1941 whilst detached to the training battalion as officer commanding; rejoining his unit later that year in time for garrison duties in Syria over the winter. He was promoted to Major early in the Kokoda Campaign, however, was evacuated with scrub typhus. He was discharged following the war's end, on 17th October 1945. [3] After the war he was awarded the campaign and service medals 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Australia Service Medal 1939-1945.
Charles passed away, at just 58 years of age, in 1972 in Manly, New South Wales. [4]
