John Godfrey was interred in California.

John was born 1 Mar 1827 in Hampton Falls, Rockingham, New Hampshire, United States. [1][2]His parents were Jeremiah Godfrey (1798-1881) and Sarah Perkins Godfrey (1798-1879).[3][4]

John was a Civil War veteran. He was 42 and living in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire when he was mustered in as 1st Lieutenant and Regiment Quartermaster in Company K, 2nd Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry on 8 Jun 1861. He was discharged 31 Oct 1861 to accept a promotion. [5][6][7] For valuable services at the battle of BullRun in preserving stores and munitions he was promoted.[4] He was appointed Captain Assistant Quartermaster in the United States Volunteers on 10 Sep 1861. He was discharged 6 Jun 1865. Brevetted Major and Lieutenant Colonel 13 Mar 1865 for faithful and meritorious services in the Quartermaster’s Department during the war.[8]

He married Harriet E. Haskell on 10 Oct 1864 in Charlestown, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[9][3]

John was well-known as a "water wizard" in Pasadena, California where he lived for 10 years. He had a gift for being able to locate underground water, helping determine locations for wells and finding leaks in reservoirs. During the Civil War, he found fresh water for troops.[4]

He passed away 5 Sep 1899 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, United States[10] and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.[3][4]
