Biography

Edward Goddard, son of William Goddard and Elizabeth Miles,[1] was born March 24, 1674/75 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts.[2][3][4][5]

Edward Goddard is said to have married Susannah Stone, daughter of Simon and Mary Whipple Stone, June 1697.[2][6][7] She is referred to as the sister of the Hon. Mr. Stone of Newton.[8] [9]

Goddard references the History of Framingham when he writes that "The inhabitants of Framingham immediately after their corporation employed him (Edward) for several years as a school master, with a salary of forty pounds per annum, and he subsequently distinguished himself in some of the most responsible offices, being frequently selectman and moderator, for a long series of years town clerk, and for several years representative in the General Court."[10]

Edward and Susannah Stone Goddard had children Edward, Susannah, Simon, Benjamin, and David born at Watertown and children William, Mary, Ebenezer, and Ebenezer 2d born at Boston,[11] also William b. 1720 and Hepzibah b. 1725.[2]

About Edward's death Goddard includes "The following biographical sketch of his character taken from a newspaper published at Boston." Framingham, Feb. 9, 1754. This morning expired here, after a short illness of the epidemical fever, the Hon. Edward Goddard, Esq. in the 79th year of his age. He was a person of very good natural powers, inquisitive and curious genius, industrious spirit and considerable improvements in both divine & political knowledge, esteemed for sobriety, integrity, judiciousness and piety from his youth, . . .". Goddard also writes: "It is remarkable that on January 19, died his son, the Rev. Mr. David Goddard of Leicester, who left seven children, and on January 28, his son Benjamin of Shrewsbury, who left seven children, on February 4, his own consort (Susannah Stone Goddard), and on the 9th himself, and all of this dreadful fever which has lately carried off such numbers in these parts of the country."[12]
