Biography

1776 Project
Lieutenant Dudley Glass Sr served with Halifax County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Dudley Glass Sr is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A045323.

Capt Dudley G. Glass Sr was born about 1737, in Banbridge, County Down, Ireland, or the Colony of Virginia after his family emigrated to British Colonial America.

Dudley fought in the Revolutionary War as a 2nd Lieutenant in Capt Milner's Company. He registered for military service in 1778[1][2]

Dudley Glass Sr. was witness to the land deed of his brother James Glass, land adjoining their father William Glass, on headwaters of Banister River, part in Halifax County and part of the 120 acres in Pittsylvania County, Virginia[3] On 3 Dec 1778 Dudley Glass Sr. was also a witness to his father's deed. William Glass Sr. purchased 500 acres on Brush Creek of Banister River, part in Halifax and part in Pittsylvania County witnessed by Dudley Glass, Thomas Glass, and James Glass.[4]

"Dudley Glass Senior of Halifax County" wrote his will on 17 Nov 1824, and it was proved in Halifax Co., Virginia, on 22 Oct 1827. He signed his will "Dudley Glass Senr" - there was no middle name nor middle initial in the will document. He named his wife Sally, to have her personal property itemsand slaves she brought to his home, and to also keep her land she owned when moving. Children named: son John 1/6-part, son Dudley 1/6-part, son George's children named (nothing to George) 1/6-part, daughter Molly Farmer, 1/6-part, daughter Ragland, 1/6-part, daughter Judith Irby's children named (nothing to Judith), 1/6 part. Negroes not to be divided with George's children or Judith's children but divided by Lot to the other surviving four children. The Executor of the will was William B. Blanks, gave oath by law, and a bond of $15,000 was secured with Dudley Glass and Samuel Williams. (Samuel Williams signed as Clerk of Halifax County Clerk.)[5]

In a Halifax County Court procedure the surviving four children of Dudley Glass, Sr. received an equal division of his negroes, divided by Lot: Lot #1 Fanny Ragland, Lot #2 Martha Farmer, Lot #3 John Glass, Lot #4 Dudley Glass. Court recorded 24 March 1828.[6]

Marriages and Children

Dudley Glass was married three times[7]:

  • First wife: Frances Glass: (born Priddy/Prideaux), married about 1764
  • Second wife: Ann Glass (born Simmons), married 15 March 1805
  • Third wife: Sarah "Sally" Anne Carr (born Phelps) She was named as wife in his will. Per the will statements she was to keep her property she owned before coming to his house including land, one can conclude she was a widow and previously married.

Dudley's children include[8]:

I am a Priddy descendant being my mother's maiden name. I manage several profiles for this line. I too notice several errors per microfilm of Dudley Glass, Sr.'s will. Will attach the FamilySearch will of Dudley Glass, Sr., for his will source does not provide his actual county probate will image. I will also clear up errors per his will.

During my Data Doctor rounds, I noticed this profile is on my check-up list for Data Doctor-Error 209: Father is also a sibling. You can read more about this here on the help page for this suggestion: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DBE_209.

The profile needs to be evaluated and make the necessary changes. I appreciate your help and please let me know if I can help you in any way!

Also Have you checked your suggestion list? I work mine every week, it is so helpful. I learn a lot watching the videos and correcting errors.

Thanks,

Debbie
