Biography

William Henry, eldest son of William Gladstone and Catherine Glynne was born in Westminster, London and christened at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster on 16 July 1840 [1] He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church College, Oxford where he studied Latin and Greek. He was a great lover of music and was a singer and organist and well read in musical history especially the development of Anglican church music. He composed hymn tunes, among which is Hammersmith 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind'. [2] He was also a keen football player and played for Scotland in the first unofficial England v Scotland Football International in 1870 [3]
He was a Liberal Party Member of Parliament for 20 years from 1865 to 1885 representing Chester for 3, Whitby for 12 and East Worcestershire for 5.
He married at the age of 35, Gertrude Stuart, youngest daughter of Lord Blantyre at St. George's, Hanover Square in 1875 [4] and they had two daughters, Evelyn and Constance, who didn't marry, and a son, William. He inherited the Glynne estates from his uncle Sir Stephen Glynne, his mother's brother, including Harwarden Castle, which on his death passed to his son. In 1888 he was appointed High Sheriff of Flintshire.
He died in 41, Berkeley Square, London in 1891 [5] and was buried at Harwarden Churchyard [6] Probate on his Will was granted to his widow and his brothers Henry and Herbert on 22 September 1891 [7]

Research notes

Most references to his place of birth point to Harwarden, Flintshire but all census records including 1841 which has a clear 'y' in 'born in same county' which was St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, Middlesex.
