On 5th June 1940, Robert enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force, his nation's all-volunteer expeditionary force for the Second World War. Elizabeth Gillam was listed as his next-of-kin. [3] He was posted to the 2/1st Mobile Printing Unit, with whom he attained the senior non-commissioned rank of Sergeant and served in the Middle East. The Australian War Memorial holds a canvas covered album containing information on the 33 members of the 2/1st Mobile printing Unit, dated circa 1942 in the Middle East. [4]
His final posting was to the Land Headquarters Printing Press with the senior non-commissioned rank of Staff Sergeant. He was demobilised on 20th January 1944. [3]
