"Plumilla Jane Gilbert taught school at Berlin, Iowa, the summer of 1870. None of us know where Berlin was; Aunt Floy just notes it wasn't on any Iowa maps she had access to at the time she wrote her family history. She notes she had letters written by Millie and Alex to each other that summer. The winter of 1870-71, she taught near Honey Creek, yhork and Greeley, all in Delware Co. She mentions she is wearing Alex's ring in a letter dated Oct. 30, 1870. He was going to school the winter of 1870-71, according to those letters, in Iowa Falls. His mother and family lived at Buckeye Grove at that time, and that's where Millie's letters to Alex were addressed. Millie continued to teach through the summer school of 1871 in Delaware Co. He went back to Hardin Co., and raised and harvested a crop that summer. He and George Archer Jr. traveled by team and wagon out to the NW corner of Iowas, and Sw corner of Minn., Se corner of S. Dak. and ito Nebraska as far as Grand Island that summer, looking for property to homestead, but did not take up any. They returned to Hardin Co., and Alex went to Delaware Co. for Millie that August. It appears they lived with his mother until November, by which time they'd saved up enough to set up housekeeping. Bert was born in Delaware Co., because Millie went to her parents' home to have him."
