Biography
Obadiah Gilbert immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.
Obadiah Gilbert was baptised at Yardley in Worcestershire in Jun 1629 with his father (only) named as Thomas Gilbert.[1] From an image of the Yardley Church register on Ancestry, it would appear to have been on the 7th day of June.[2]
He married Elizabeth, widow of Nehamiah Olmstead, daugter of Jehu Burr. She married (3) Capt. Nathaniel Seeley."[3]
"On 11 Jan. 1670 [1670/1] he entered his homelot at Fairfield of which he had had quiet possession above eight years."[4]
Obadiah was buried at the Old Burying Ground, Fairfield, Connecticut in Aug 1674.[5]
The Will of Obadiah Gilbert of Fairfield, 23 Aug. 1674 names wife Elizabeth; daughter Sarah Olmsted; sons Obadiah, Benjamin, Joseph; brothers Jonathan and Josiah Gilbert, overseers. An inventory was taken on 16 Sept. 1674."[6]
"Elizabeth Seeley conveyed to her sons Obadiah and Benjamin Gilbert as Executrix of her husband Gilbert's will; recorded 21 June 1688."[7]
