Genealogy Summary

The George family can be traced back with certainty from William Moses P. George four generations, to his 2nd-great-grandfather Jesse George, Sr., who was born c. 1760 in South Carolina. Jesse was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Jesse's son Dr. Jesse George, Jr., born in North Carolina c. 1785, migrated from North Carolina to Georgia to Upshur County, Texas, where he died in 1861. Jesse, Jr.'s son Dr. James Henry George, born in Georgia in 1812, did not follow his family to Texas. Instead, he settled in Tangipahoa/St. Helena Parish, LA, where he worked as a phrenologist, parish judge, and postmaster. He died there in 1884. James Henry's son Moses Pinkney George, born in Louisiana in 1853, migrated from Louisiana to Tarrant County, TX, where he died in 1922. The story of Moses's son William Moses P. George is told below.

William Moses P. George was a fourth-generation Texan:

1. WMP George was born in Tarrant County, TX in 1914.

2. WMP George's mother, Gertrude Brewer, was born in Tarrant County, TX c. 1896. His father, Moses Pinkney George, was born in Louisiana and moved to Texas c. 1912.

3. None of WMP George's four grandparents were born in Texas, but two of them, Sylvester Brewer and Zora Taylor, moved to Texas in the late 1800s. Sylvester's birthplace is unknown. Zora was born in TN in 1878 and moved to Texas with her family as a child in 1881. Sylvester and Zora married in Denton, TX in 1895. WMP George's other grandparents, James Henry George (born in GA in 1812) and Kizziah Newsom (born in LA in 1826) made their home in Louisiana.

4. None of WMP George's eight great-grandparents were born in Texas, but two moved to Texas in the mid to late 1800s. Jesse George was born in NC in 1785 and moved to Georgia and then Texas by 1860, making him WMP George's earliest direct ancestor to arrive in Texas. William Nathaniel Taylor was born in TN in 1850 and moved his family to Texas in 1881.

Moses's Military Ancestors:

William Moses P. George is the 2nd-great-grandson of Jesse George, a veteran of the Revolutionary War and great-grandson of Moses Newsom, veteran of the War of 1812.

Timeline

William Moses Pinkney George went by several names: Moses, MP, Bill. For the purposes of this profile, he will be referred to as Moses, the name documented in the attached sources.

1914: Birth

Moses's original Certificate of Birth, #7200, was later corrected in 1940. The original form was completed before he was named and the name of the child was listed as George, date of birth: 2/3/14, father, M.P. George, maiden name of mother: Mary, residence of parents: Riverside, occupation of father: laborer, informant: H.H. Butler, Ft. Worth, RR1. The town on the form was listed as Birdville in Tarrant County. [17]
The corrected certificate of birth, #3649, was marked "Received Dec 14 1940", full name of child: William MP George, father: Moses P. George (age 57), mother: Gertrude A. Brewer (age 16). The informant was James E. Stephens, the third husband of Moses's mother Gertrude. [1][5][18]

Were there three or four George brothers?:

Moses had at least two younger brothers. There is confusion whether Pemberton and Henry are, in fact, the same person. A birth certificate was found for Pemberton, but not for Henry, and a death certificate was found for Henry, but not for Pemberton.
1. On May 10, 1916, Moses's brother Pemberton (?) was born. The handwriting on the birth certificate is difficult to read. The birth certificate indicates that the family lived on RR1 in Fort Worth, TX, that the father, M. George (age 62), worked as a laborer, and the mother, Gertie Brewer (age 24), had given birth to two children, both of whom were living. [19][20]
2. Henry was born in 1918, according to the 1920 census as well as Henry's death certificate, but no birth records have been found.
3. On January 12, 1919, Moses's brother Woodrow was born. The birth certificate indicated that the family's address was Grapevine, Tarrant County, TX, the father, Moses George (age 66) worked as a farmer, and that the mother, Gertrude Brewer (age 22) had given birth to three children, all of whom were living. [21]

1920 Census

In 1920, Moses (age 6) lived in precinct 4, Tarrant County, TX with his parents, Moses (age 65) and Gertrude (age 23), and brothers Henry (age 2) and Woodrow (newborn). Moses's father could read and write but his mother could not. Moses, Sr. worked as a public laborer.
The family lived next door to Moses's maternal grandmother Zora Taylor-Clark (age 42), her husband John Clark (age 45, a farm laborer), and their son Jimmie Clark (age 18, a rug maker at Binky Rug Factory). On the other side of Grandma Zora, there was a care home called Tarrant County Home that housed over 50 widows and elderly people. [2]

Spanish Flu Epidemic:

Moses's younger brothers, Henry and Woodrow, were victims of the Spanish Flu Epidemic. Moses was 6 years old at the time of their deaths.
On February 13, 1920, on their father's 67th birthday, Moses's brother Henry died of pneumonia in a hospital in Ft. Worth. The family's residence was listed as the Van Zandt Addition in Fort Worth, TX. The death certificate was #8028. [22]
Two days later, on February 15, 1920, Moses's brother Woodrow died of pneumonia in a hospital in Ft. Worth. No information was provided about the family or their address on the death certificate (#8027). [23]
Just two years later, on March 15, 1922, Moses's father passed away at age 69 of Tuberculosis, which may have also been related to the Spanish Flu. At that time the family lived on Birdville Road in Haltom City, Tarrant County, TX. Moses was 8 years old when his father died. [24]
In 1923, Moses's mother Gertrude had a daughter, Zora Bernice, out of wedlock. She then married Marion Guy Keene and had a daughter, Juanita Pearl, in 1927. It is understood that Mr. Keene adopted Bernice and raised her as his own child.
By 1928, the blended Keene family lived on Harris Lane in Haltom City, TX. [25][26]

1930 Census

In 1930, Moses (age 15) lived on Harris Avenue in Haltom City, Tarrant County, TX with his mother Gertrude (age 35), step-father Marion G. Keen (age 46, a farm laborer), and two half-sisters, Bernice (age 6) and Juanita P.(age 3). Mr. Keene owned the home, which was valued at $600. Moses had not attended school, but he was the only member of the household able to read and write.
Again, the family lived next door to Moses's maternal grandmother, Zora Taylor-Clark (age 51) and her husband John Clark (age 56, a laborer). [4]
Moses lived in various houses on Harris Lane in Haltom City, TX over the next 50 years. His wife would continue to live there after his death.
As a young man, Moses was transient. He rode the trains all over the southwest and was known to live in Missouri and California.

1936: CA Voter Rolls

By 1936, Moses had moved to Los Angeles, CA. His name was listed as Moses P. George on the Index to Register of Voters, Los Angeles City Precinct No. 734. He lived at 162 Venice Blvd, was a laborer, and registered as a Democrat. [27]

1940 Census: not found

It is not known when Moses married Margaret Erwin Richey. She was a native of Paris, TX. No marriage record has been found, but she was listed as Moses's wife as early as 1940.

1940 WW2 Draft

On October 16, 1940, Moses Pinkney George (age 26) registered for the young men's draft. At that time, he resided at 1518 E. 77 Place, Los Angeles, CA with his wife, Margaret. He had brown hair, blue eyes, a light complexion, was 5'9" tall, and weighed 205 pounds. He reported that he owned his own business. [5]
On December 9, 1942, Moses’s wife, Margaret Erwin George, registered for War Ration Stamps in Jackson County, MO at address 912 Tracy, Kansas City, MO. [28]
War Ration Book Four, which was issued in late 1943, was issued to William M.P. George of 1403 Toberman, Los Angeles, CA. [28]

1943 WW2 Army Enlistment

On October 12, 1943, Moses P. George (age 29) enlisted as a private in the US Army in Los Angeles, CA. He was married at that time (presumably to Margaret). [18][29]

1943: Marriage License

In December of 1943, Moses P. George of Route 6, Fort Worth, TX and Miss Margaret Richey of Ontario, Cal. received a marriage license in Tarrant County, Texas. It is not known if their previous marriage was informal or if they were formalizing a previous California marriage in Texas. [6]
One year into his enlistment, Moses's mother, Gertrude, died of cancer of the womb on March 20, 1944. [30] Moses was listed in her obituary as Moses P. George of California. [31]

European Theatre of Operations, WW2:

On August 24, 1945, Moses was listed in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram as a soldier registered in Paris, France:
“The Star-Telegram is in receipt of a letter from T/5 Elmer R. Stewart, 2921 Ave. A, written on Red Cross stationery from the Red Cross Club at Rainbow Corner, Paris, France.
In his letter, Stewart says that while looking through the State Register there, he saw the names of Fort Worth soldiers signed there, and he gave the names: [about 40 names were listed, among them was M. P. George].
Stewart states that there were a great many more from Fort Worth, “but they had been handled so much that they were not readable.” He goes on to say:
“It is interesting to note that Texas is more than well represented in all undertakings in the ETO and that Fort Worth is one of the predominating and outstanding cities.”
And he closes his letter on this note of nostalgia:
“When I finally get my discharge, it will be a real pleasure to return to Fort Worth where folks are real folks.” [32]
In September 1945, Moses's wife Margaret George received a letter from her cousin James, a conscientious objector. She lived in Ontario, CA at the time. Her cousin asked, "How is Bill making out by now? I would love to see him. Give him my regards when you write him." [28]
On December 8, 1945, Moses sent a postcard to his wife, Mrs. W. George, Gen Del (general delivery), Paris, TX:
Dearest I love you. This card is from the town I live in here in Germany But by the time you get this I’ll be in Belgium. By Now Love Bill”,
The card was postmarked in Paris, TX on January 17, 1946. [28]

1947: Release from Military

During his 4-year enlistment, Moses achieved the rank of T Sergeant during World War 2. He served with the 539th in Germany, France, and Belgium. Moses's enlistment ended on April 19, 1947. [18]
Family legend indicates that Moses and his first wife Margaret at some point had a daughter and that when Moses returned from the war, his wife had taken up with another man. The little girl called the other man "Daddy." Moses left his wife and daughter in California and returned home to Texas, never to see them again. [12] However, no birth record has been found to confirm the existence of a daughter, and no references to a daughter were made in correspondence nor in Margaret's obituary. This mystery remains unsolved.
Moses filed for divorce from Margaret in November of 1947. [7]
The divorce was granted early the next year. [8]

1948: Second Marriage

On January 23, 1948, Moses P. George of 2220 Harris Lane (age 33) and Thelma Wood of 605 Samuels Ave. (age 23) received their marriage license in Tarrant County, TX. [33]
Moses may have met his second wife through his half-sister, Bernice, who had attended the same high school, Paschal High School, as Thelma's sister Dorothy Wood.
The newlyweds made their first home at 2220 Harris Lane, Haltom City, TX. [9]
The couple had 3 children; all are still living. On the Texas Birth Index for the birth of his children, Moses's name was listed as William Moses P. George for his sons and William Patrick George for his daughter (Patrick is listed on the original document, but was transcribed as Patrice on the searchable index--many family trees erroneously list him as William Moses Patrice George).

1950 Census

In 1950, Moses (age 36) lived at 2220 Harris Lane in Oak Knoll Village, Tarrant County, TX with his 2nd wife Thelma (age 25) and their son (age 1). Moses worked as an appliance service man for a retail department store. [13] Moses's grandmother, Zora Taylor-Clark lived at 2216 Harris Lane.
The George family moved frequently. Their whereabouts can be tracked using entries in the city directory:
In 1952-1955, Moses and his family lived at 2220 Harris Lane, Haltom City, Tarrant Co., TX. Moses worked as a serviceman at a carwash called The Fair. [34][35]
In March 1955, Moses discovered his step-grandfather, John H. Clark, dead at his home at 2216 Harris Lane. Moses lived at 2220 Harris Lane at that time. [36]
In 1956, Moses and his family lived at 4556 Newman Dr., Haltom City, Tarrant Co., TX. Moses continued to work as a serviceman at The Fair. [37]
In 1959-1960, Moses and his family lived at 4005 Hollis St., Haltom City, Tarrant Co., TX. The home no longer stands. Moses continued to work as a serviceman at The Fair. [38][39]

1980: Death

Moses died on January 10, 1980, age 65, as a result of myocardial infarction (heart attack), atherosclerosis (cardiovascular disease), and hypertensive heart disease. He also struggled with diabetes and chronic renal failure. Moses's occupation was listed as maintenance man at a car wash (see attached photo of death certificate). [43][18][3][10][11][44]
